Special Focus: How To Stop Smoking Without Gaining Weight

This series of articles will help you learn how to stop smoking while avoiding one of the biggest problems that people associate with stopping smoking: Weight gain. While you might gain a small about of weight, large amounts of weight gain are not an inevitable part of stopping smoking. When you stop smoking, you need to learn some new habits to help you handle your cravings. Remember, a craving only lasts about 5 minutes. Consider these actions to help deal with your cravings.

What To Do After You Quit Smoking

Learn how to reduce cravings for both cigarettes and food. Here is a quick summary of the techniques:

  • Replace smoking with other activities.
  • Drink less caffeine.  Caffeine may only make nicotine withdrawal worse.
  • Get enough sleep. Tired can cause cravings.
  • Reduce tension. Relaxation can help replace the urge to smoke.
  • Get support and encouragement. You need a lot of support to quit smoking.  Nicotine Anonymous can help. If you can, find a friend to quit with you for mutual support.
  • Talk to your doctor about nicotine replacement. If you have significant withdrawal symptoms or are concerned about weight gain, talk to your doctor, he may be able to prescribe medication to help you quit smoking.
  • Try not to do things that tempt you to smoke or eat when you are not hungry.  Substitute healthy activities for smoking.

Remember: Try not to panic about modest weight gain.
